Indonesia Becomes the Country with the Highest Ransomeware Threat in ASEAN
Not a few companies from Indonesia have experienced data breaches, especially those originating from malware. Because of this, the threat of Ransomeware in Indonesia is classified as the highest in Asean. This is also not an assumption because the data is available, this leak is increasingly worrying because personal data can be leaked at any time.
Based on data owned by Menlo Security, Indonesia currently has 202 million internet users, where these users indirectly contribute to the national digital economy of US$70 billion, with US$146 billion projected by 2025.
This rapid digital growth is followed by a significant increase in cyber threats. A recent report from National Cyber Security (NCSI) explains that Indonesia's cyber security level is ranked 6th in Asean, while globally Indonesia is ranked 83 out of 160 countries. This is not something to be proud of, but it needs to be watched and prevented so that the number decreases or Indonesia's ranking increases.
In the last 3 years, cyber threats have generally targeted various large companies and even government institutions. One of the main causes is that legacy networks and network security infrastructure are no longer able to accommodate the way people work in today's modern landscape, including in preventing Highly Evasive Adaptive Threats (HEAT) which can result in ransomware.
"We help businesses with cloud security by implementing zero-trust and isolation cores to ensure they are safe from any online attacks. We help companies safeguard and prevent digital risks through 100 percent military-grade security with a US$1 million malware guarantee," said CK Mah, Regional Director, Southeast Asia, Menlo Security.
The Interpol report also confirms this by stating that around 2.7 million ransomware were detected in ASEAN countries throughout 2021. Indonesia ranks first with 1.3 million cases. This was revealed in the ASEAN Cyberthreat Assessment 2021 report released by Interpol. This is almost half of the total ransomware threats among ASEAN countries. Vietnam came second with 886,874 cases. Meanwhile, Brunei is the lowest with 257 cases.
